Where nothing grows

Haunted relentlessly by the search for self, constantly searching for a knowable other defining personal identity, the city erases identity by imprinting its banality upon the individual. As the city is the lure to realize the self's highest potential, so too does it lure to the lowest depth.

The city is a labyrinth. In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde calls it "a labyrinth of grimy streets and black, grass-less squares."
