The Allegory of the Vacuum Cleaner: A Thought Experiment on Space and Dust

Close your eyes and imagine the floor of your house, specifically the corners, the hard-to-reach places where nobody ever goes. Look at that dust.

On Earth, when you sweep, you find piles of dust in hard-to-reach places. The dust doesn't stay evenly dispersed; it gathers in clumps, in bunches, in tangles. The clumps get brushed-aside by normal foot traffic. You might even see it swirling into little tornadoes when you walk past. 

Why? Because on Earth, gravity rules. It pulls everything down, flattening the world. But dust is light, and it has a secret: it clings together.

When you look closely at that dust bunny, you are seeing the result of “van der Waals forces.” These are the tiny, invisible magnets of the universe. Even though the dust particles are electrically neutral, their electron clouds fluctuate, creating momentary dipoles. They attract. 

But on Earth, gravity is so strong that it overpowers these weak magnets for anything larger than a speck. A pebble on Earth "sticks" to the floor because of gravity. But dust motes? They stick together. A mote of dust sticks to other dust motes. Together, they form a cluster.

Now, let’s leave the Earth behind. Let’s step into the void occupied by Bennu the asteroid. The frame-of-reference changes. In space, gravity is not the boss anymore. It’s only a whisper. On Bennu, the pull of gravity is so weak (about one millionth of Earth's) that the invisible magnets of van der Waals forces become the dominant force holding it together.

Imagine a grain of sand on Bennu. It is floating (weightless), not falling down in the way a grain of sand falls on Earth. It's hovering. You drift by, unperturbed by Bennu's negligible local gravity. Scoop a handful of Bennu dust and fly away. No argument from Bennu.

On Earth: Two grains of sand touch, they fall apart immediately. Gravity wins.

On Bennu: Two grains touch. Click. The van der Waals force grabs them. They stick.

How does that happen? Imagine that grain of sand is actually a pebble. On Earth, the pebble hits another pebble and bounces off. On Bennu, the pebble meets another pebble and they stick together. The contact surface is tiny, but the force is just enough to hold. The pebbles don't drift apart. And they “meet” other pebbles like themselves.

The Coffee Grounds Problem
Here is where the coffee grounds comparison gives the illusion of a solid rock. Bennu has been said to have the consistency of “coffee grounds.”

Imagine a pile of freshly ground coffee. It is a loose pile of grounds, but it holds together. Why? Because there are “fines.” Fines are tiny particles of dust and broken grounds that fall into the gaps between the larger grounds. They fill the voids. They create a web of contact points. The same way, van der Waals forces act on all those tiny contacts, creating a collective strength. The coffee grounds become a unified mass, even though it's just a pile of particles.

Now, imagine a sack of marbles. You pour them out, and they roll away. They are smooth. They touch at a only a single point. There are no fines to fill the gaps. In a pile of sand, the marbles would have to be sifted to separate them from the pile of aggregate. If you try to sweep marbles on the floor, they won't stay together in a neat heap. They are too large, too smooth, and there are too few contact points for the weak van der Waals forces to hold them together.

Bennu may also be compared to a bag of marbles. The bits that fill the gaps between coffee grounds is missing. The space between marbles is empty. There are no intermediate particles to create the web of contact. They are too large, separately, to be held together by the weak van der Waals forces alone. 

So, what happens? In space, the marbles float. They touch, forming a pack. They don't roll away. They collect in a loose, chaotic jumble, held together only by the faint, weak pull of their own collective gravity.

The Dust Problem
Think back to that dust bunny in your room. It is a loose aggregate. It is held together by the same force that holds the dust on Bennu, but on Earth, the dust bunny is also a loose pile. It's not an opaque object. If you touch it, it falls apart. But here is the twist: On Earth, a dust bunny remains small, because Earth's gravity pulls it down. In space, however, gravity is so weak that the dust bunnies can grow into huge asteroids. As the cluster drifts, it keeps on sticking. The dust bunny gets bigger. It becomes a rock. It becomes a bunch of rocks. Eventually, it becomes an asteroid. But because it is still like a pile of rocks, it has no internal structure—not enough gravity to make a difference. It is not a “solid” mass. It is still a box of rocks.

The Collapse of the Metaphor
Imagine you dropped Bennu on Earth; what would happen? The marbles (grains) become too heavy for the van der Waals forces to hold together against Earth's gravity. The cluster collapses and the cohesion fails. The beanbag spills on the floor. The beans tumble every which way. The whole collapses into a heap. 

The moral is, strength is not about size; it's about packing. On Earth, a mountain is a stable mass because the weight of the stone compresses, creating a massive object. On Bennu, the weight is too slight to compress the rocks. They remain loose.

The Intuitive Experience of Zero Gravity
So, when you look at Bennu, don't think of a boulder. Think of a “cloud” of rocks. Imagine a cloud of pebbles, all floating in a slow, slowly turning motion. They are not stuck together with glue; they stick together like static electricity. They are held together by the absence of the force of gravity. The lack of gravity allows them to stay together.

The Physical Conclusion
Bennu is not a boulder hurling through space. It is a cloud of pebbles. It is a cloud of pebbles that looks like a rock because it is so big. But if you try to stand on it, you would sink into it. You would fall into the same emptiness surrounding everything else. You would feel the absence of packing in the “weightless” mass. 

Final Thoughts
It is a meditation on the fragility of the universe. The solid world we know is an illusion created by strong gravity. The feather-weight world of space is, in truth, an expanse of dust, floating, drifting, clumping and held together by the tickle of proximity. Bennu is like a big beanbag. A dust bunny in the far reaches of space. A feather pillow in the darkness of space.
